Study proves Olay unbeatable vs. 6 other creams

A recent study comparing seven anti-ageing creams and their ingredients revealed that Olay Total Effects beats 6 other creams when it comes to its composite score in restoring moisture, enhancing exfoliation and protecting skin from free radicals.

Conducted by P&G Beauty scientists in Cincinnati, the study sought to evaluate the ability of seven commercially available topical anti-ageing products in effectively restoring, enhancing and protecting the skin to make it younger-looking.  Each of the creams contained different popular anti-ageing technologies.

A well-recognized strategy to improve the appearance of ageing skin is to simultaneously target multiple changes that occur during the ageing process. According to an independent 3rd party survey conducted at the 21st World Congress of Dermatology, 9 out of 10 dermatologists agreed that “an effective anti-ageing treatment should restore skin health by strengthening the moisture barrier, enhance the appearance of skin, and protect skin’s surface from damaging free radicals.”

Assessing Anti-Ageing Efficacy

Based on these international standards, P&G scientists developed the Multi-Performance Index (MPI), a tool that allows scientists to assess and rank an anti-ageing facial cream’s performance against these three factors.

Seven commercially available products – Olay Total Effects and creams with Beech Extract, with Idebenone, with Retinol, with Beta-Hydroxy Acid (BHA), with Folic Acid, and with Vitamin C and E – were included in the study, which used three key technical measurements to assess the creams’ effectiveness in restoring, enhancing and protecting skin.

To test whether a product restores the skin’s barrier function, scientists measured the rate of trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) over a 30 day period. A product which helps restore skin’s moisture barrier lipids will demonstrate a decrease in a person’s TEWL and ensure skin moisture levels are maintained. Moisturized skin will function more effectively, maintain a more even tone and texture and appear more radiant, while dryness, lines and wrinkles will be minimized.

To evaluate whether a product enhances the skin’s appearance via exfoliation, the rate of surface cell turnover was measured. As women age, the rate of surface cell turnover slows down, impacting the skin’s tone, texture and radiance and increasing fine lines and wrinkles. Increasing the rate of surface cell turnover then becomes another key step to achieving younger looking skin.

Finally, to assess whether a product protects skin from free radicals, the amount of lipid peroxides (LPO) on the skin was measured. Lipid Peroxides are created when UV rays and free radicals attack the skin and have been linked to premature ageing. Reducing the amount of LPO on the skin therefore becomes one way to keep skin young-looking.

Creams go Head to Head

Ranking the relative performance of the 7 anti-ageing creams, Olay Total Effects showed the strongest and most balanced overall performance, with an MPI score of 90.  Olay Total Effects was better than other creams in restoring the skin’s moisture barrier and enhancing the skin’s appearance through exfoliation; it also performed comparatively well in protecting the skin from free radicals.

The cream with Beech Extract at an MPI of 70, and Folic Acid at an MPI of 60, came in second and third respectively. Both creams scored relatively well on all three factors of restore, enhance and protect.

However some creams, while performing strongly on one benefit, did not score as high on the others, like the brand with retinol.

“Retinoids may deliver anti-wrinkle effects but those effects may come with irritation and redness, resulting from damage to the skin’s barrier,” commented P&G Skin Care Scientist, David Khoo.

Olay Total Effects

According to P&G Beauty Scientists, Olay Total Effects scored highest because of its unique VitaNiacin Complex, which allowed it to give multiple benefits and help fight the 7 signs of skin ageing.

To restore the skin’s moisture barrier, it has Niacinamide plus Pro-Vitamin B5 that helps skin retain its natural moisture for better moisturization.

Niacinamide or Vitamin B3 also works with Panthenol and Vitamin E to provide a host of skin benefits that enhance the appearance of skin, such as reducing hyperpigmented spots, improving texture via reduction of sebum secretion and reducing wrinkles via up-regulation of collagen synthesis.

To protect skin from free radicals, Olay Total Effects contains an effective combination of broad spectrum sunscreen and anti-oxidants Vitamin C and E.
