Olay Exposé puts 7 anti-ageing creams to the test.

In this event, dermatologists and scientists define the standards for an effective topical anti-ageing cream and reveal the results of an investigative beauty study that compares the efficacy of 7 popular anti-ageing creams and their ingredients.
The standard for an effective anti-ageing cream
What causes skin ageing and what should creams do to fight it? Olay Exposé began with board-certified dermatologist Dr. Rosario Abaya-Blas of St. Luke’s Medical Center, who described what dermatologists’ look for in an anti-ageing product.
"There are many different ways of fighting the signs of aging. The primary way is through our lifestyle - protecting ourselves from photo aging. For example, avoiding sun exposure during the hours of 10am - 3pm and applying sunscreen. Another way is through topicals. For these to work effectively, they need to provide multiple benefits, as there are many clinical signs of aging. From dryness, wrinkles, dull skin... all of these have different causes that need to be addressed to give women the appearance of younger-looking skin", Dr. Blas said.
Dermatologists from around the world also concur with this standard as an independent 3rd party survey conducted at the 21st World Congress of Dermatology shows that 9 out of 10 dermatologists agreed that “an effective anti-ageing treatment should restore skin health by strengthening the moisture barrier, enhance the appearance of skin, and protect skin’s surface from damaging free radicals.”
Dr. Blas went on to explain the importance of the 3 factors. Repairing our skin’s moisture barrier is one key way to fight skin ageing because as we grow older, our skin’s natural moisture is reduced, making skin drier and more prone to wrinkles. Improving the moisture barrier results in softer and better skin texture.
Increasing exfoliation to improve skin appearance is a second key way to help make skin appear younger-looking. Metabolism in the skin (as everywhere else) also slows down as we age and so does the rate at which epidermal cells are produced and shed. The slowdown in cell regeneration makes the complexion look dull so increasing the exfoliation rate of skin cells becomes important to help brighten our skin tone and improve the appearance of the skin surface.
Finally, protection from damaging free radicals is the third benefit an anti-ageing cream should provide. Exposure to UV rays, smoke and pollution damage our skin, causing spots and wrinkles to appear over time.
Putting creams to the test
So which cream gives the best all-around anti-ageing results? P&G Scientific Communications Manager David Khoo exposed the outcome of an investigative beauty study comparing the overall efficacy of 7 popular anti-ageing creams and their ingredients.
The creams were ranked using the anti-ageing Multi-Performance Index (MPI), a composite score designed by P&G scientists, based on benefits dermatologists deem important, that measures the effectiveness of a facial cream in restoring moisture, enhancing exfoliation and protecting the skin’s surface against damaging free radicals to revive its youthful beauty.
In the study, Olay Total Effects had the best composite score at restoring, enhancing, and protecting skin all at the same time to keep it younger-looking. Its unique VitaNiacin Complex provides all three benefits that dermatologists deem important to help fight the 7 signs of skin ageing with just one product.
